Graphalloy for Drinking Water Applications, Food Applications
Potable Water
NSF International has certified grades of GRAPHALLOY material for use in municipal well pumps and treatment plant applications. These Graphalloy grades are certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61-"Drinking Water System Components- Health Effects" and approved in the category for Multiple Water Contact Materials up to 180°F.
The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS, UK) has approved a grade of GRAPHALLOY material as suitable for contact with wholesome water for domestic purposes having met the requirements of BS 6920-1:2000 and/or 2014 'Suitability of non-metallic products for use in contact with water intended for human consumption with regard to their effect on the quality of the water'.

Andrew Ondish Joins Sales Team at Graphite Metallizing

Ondish as Territory Sales Manager for New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania,
Delaware, Maryland and Eastern New York.
Ondish holds a B.S. degree in Petroleum
Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. With nearly thirty years of
experience in sales and engineering, he previously served as Regional
Sales Manager at Grundfos Pumps, Regional Sales Manager for Hazleton
Pumps and Product Engineer for Sundyne Corporation. Ondish was also a
commissioned officer in the Army Reserve.

GRAPHALLOY® Upgrade Saves Boiler Feed Pump
Keeping a multistage boiler feed pump operating was a problem for a gas plant...until they installed GRAPHALLOY bushings and wear rings.
A large industrial gas supplier in the southeastern United States experienced a catastrophic failure of a horizontal 8-stage, axially split, BB3-type multistage pump in Boiler Feed Service. The pump had been fitted with a plastic composite (Teflon®/Carbon Fiber) material for the stationary wear rings and bushings.
They contacted Graphite Metallizing and invited one of our engineers to visit their repair shop to examine the failed pump and recommend a GRAPHALLOY upgrade.
Here is what he saw: the throttle bushing showed the most wear. The sleeve under the throttle bushing was worn with radial grooves that appeared to be from contact with the stationary (plastic composite) wear part. However, in this case, the center stage (typically the first part to fail in a dry run episode or low viscosity transient) was fine while all of the hub side composite inserts were missing and the eye side inserts were unaffected. This tells us that we were looking at a completely different issue.
The engineers agreed that the cross section of the throttle bushing was so thin (only approximately 3/16 inch per side) and the pressure against the face of the bushing was so high that it deformed the plastic composite material causing it to move toward the ID.
The reduced clearance caused the bushing to ride onto the throttle sleeve. The friction and pressure caused the plastic composite material to melt and “blow out” the low pressure side. Once the throttle bushing was lost, the rotor lost its hydraulic balance within the case causing the rotor to shuttle towards the one end. The axial movement separated the mechanical seal faces and overloaded the bearing causing the pump to shut itself down. There was evidence the seal had leaked and the bearings showed signs of having thrust in one direction.
The Graphite Metallizing engineer recommended replacing the hub rings, center and throttle bushings, and eye side rings with nickel-grade GRAPHALLOY. The GRAPHALLOY material was ordered, shipped next day, installed and the pump was quickly put back into service. The pump has been in service now for over four years with no further problems.
The plant engineer explained that GRAPHALLOY was chosen because of successes with other pumps at this site and also for providing fast turnaround on both the quotation and replacement parts.

David Moser Joins Sales Team at GRAPHALLOY

Representative for Texas, Louisiana and southern Arkansas.
Moser holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical
Engineering Technology from Southern Polytechnic State University. He
has has over twenty years experience in the industrial market place,
much of it with a manufacturer of centrifugal pumps. Moser will be based
out of his Houston office.

GRAPHALLOY® Bushings For Clean Geothermal Energy
GRAPHALLOY® Bushings Keep Geothermal Brine Pumps Pumping
GRAPHALLOY bushings were made to conquer harsh environments. And what test could be tougher than a brine pump at a geothermal power plant?
Geothermal power is an important source of renewable energy because it is cost effective, reliable, sustainable and environmentally friendly. One U.S. power plant - a large commercial producer of geothermal energy - was experiencing major problems with its geothermal brine pumps. Geothermal brine is highly corrosive and was causing the 416SS Boron coated bearings to fail and, as a result, service life was severely reduced.
The pumps are Johnston Pump Model 24.5 x 8 x 10 Type JTCF (Discharge Head and nine stages of Type 12ES Bowls) with the following service conditions:
Flow: 1300 GPM
Total Developed Head: 485 feet
Temperature: 350° F - 400° F/180° C - 200° C
Specific Gravity: 0.89 SG
The maintenance staff at the plant tried several other bearing materials, including bronze and a type of PEEK plastic. Neither provided acceptable performance.
In 2008, the staff converted one of the brine pumps to Nickel GRAPHALLOY because they knew of its resistance to corrosion and its non-galling properties.
Results have exceeded expectations. In fact, the Maintenance Staff recently converted two additional brine pumps to Nickel GRAPHALLOY.

Submerged Pillow Blocks - 20 Years of Service in an Abrasive Environment
GRAPHALLOY® Pillow Blocks - Reliable in Wastewater Treatment
After two decades of reliable service, the GRAPHALLOY bushings in a wastewater treatment plant were replaced with new GRAPHALLOY bushings.
A large condominium complex in the Northeast maintains this wastewater treatment facility on its premises. Wastewater treatment is a chemical and biological process that removes contaminants from household sewage. This process produces wastewater and solid waste suitable for discharge back into the environment.
The condominium complex used a Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC), a type of mechanical aeration treatment system, to treat the wastewater. The RBC is a secondary treatment process that allows the wastewater to come into contact with a biological medium. This process removes pollutants from the wastewater before releasing it into a nearby body of water.
An RBC unit consists of a large disc with radial and concentric passages slowly rotating in a concrete tank so that the surface of the wastewater passing through the tank almost reaches the shaft. As a result, nearly 40% of the total surface area of the disks is always submerged in the ambient wastewater. The rotation and exposure to oxygen allows organisms to multiply and cause the biological degradation of organic pollutants.
This facility had two RBC systems - one of which was running at all times. Each system had GRAPHALLOY pillow blocks at either end and each pillow block contained GRAPHALLOY bushings that had been installed in 1988.
Using the imprint code from the outside of the casting, Graphite Metallizing was able to id
entify the pillow blocks used in the unit. The maintenance manager at the condominium complex removed two of the pillow blocks and drove the insert assemblies to the Graphite Metallizing manufacturing facility in Yonkers. Once the units were disassembled, the original bushings proved to still be functional after 20+ years of operation in the abrasive conditions. The old bushings were removed and new GRAPHALLOY bushings were manufactured and installed in the housing.
GRAPHALLOY provided reliable, long-lasting service in this difficult wastewater treatment application. The original bushings provided service 20+ years after installation.

New GRAPHALLOY® Stainless Steel Flange Block Suitable for Wet or Submersible Applications

A new series of GRAPHALLOY® self-lubricating bushings mounted in stainless steel flange blocks is now available from Graphite Metallizing Corporation. The new series combines the corrosion resistant and self-lubricating properties of GRAPHALLOY with the application and installation versatility of a flange block.
GRAPHALLOY Stainless Steel Flange Blocks are available in 2-bolt and 4-bolt configurations,come in a wide range of base dimensions, and can accommodate shaft diameters from .5" (12.7 mm) to 3.75" (95.2 mm).
GRAPHALLOY is suitable for temperatures of 750°F/399°C and above in non-oxidizing environments or with oxidation -resistant grades.
